Ukraine
The catastrophic explosion of the No. 4 reactor at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant on April 26, 1986 caused a mass exodus of the city. However, it i not abandoned and even now people live a work there. Wildlife and fauna are thriving amid the lingering tragedy.

New York City
In Lower Manhattan, a tribute has been built up and around what is left of the Twin Towers. Suicide bombers struck these towers in 2001 bringing them and the city to its knees, at least for a while. As in true New York style the area has bounced back and offers it's tribute to those who died in this act of hate.
Africa
Across Rwanda, there are more than 250 memorials which commemorate the 1994 tragedy. Some of the key sites listed as National Genocide Memorials are: Kigali, Murambi, Nyamata, Bisesero, Nyange, Rebero and Nyarubuye, Gisozi . All in different stages of commodification, yet they are important in their own right.
South Africa
This former leper colony and then a maximum security prison, where Nelson Mandela and several of his followers were imprisoned for many years under the harshest of conditions. Tourists can only visit Robben Island on a guided tour. Make sure to allow extra time for the exhibitions at the Nelson Mandela Gateway, which is where you get on the ferry to the island.
Phnom Penh, Cambodia
A former school turned torture prison, now the Tuolsleng genocide museum in Phnom Penh houses exhibits of the past. The Kiling Fields, is the national memorial site for the Cambodian Genocide at the hands of the Khmer Rouge. It is important to note that there were indeed many killing fields in Cambodia, but Choeung Ek has become the one which stands for all the others.
Poland
A former Nazi concentration camp and death camp near the city of Lublin maintains a sizeable proportion of the original buildings and the campgrounds. Although not as well known as Auschwitz, it implemented all the torture techniques.
